Boston gets harsh winters every now and then. While we are all accustomed to some cold, and even more snow, sub-zero temperatures can be a pain to deal with. We are here to remind you of some of the tasks you can do to ensure you’re staying safe in sub-zero. Check them out!
First thing’s first, make sure you have the basic necessities on hand. Make a list of all the items you currently have and items that you need from the store. Here are just some of the things you’re gonna need to stock up on:
Watch out for icicles forming along the edge of your roof for they might create ice dams. Ice dams often collect melted snow which can leak into your home and damage walls, ceilings, and insulation. Get a roof rake and nylon stockings stuffed with icemelt to remove the ice dam, or call a contractor to professionally take care of it.
Another thing to watch out for during the winter is freezing pipes! Frozen pipes can burst which ultimately leads to costly repairs. Save some additional cost while staying safe in sub-zero!
Here are a few tips to avoid frozen pipes:
Cars will have flat tires and will have some trouble starting. Make sure to have your portable car battery charger and air pump handy and fully-charged. Park indoors if you can, or with the car nose facing south to help keep the engine warm.
If not absolutely necessary, stay at home, car engines are more likely to stop during the extreme cold. Emergency services might be overwhelmed, it is better to avoid leaving the home than be stranded out. Additionally, make sure to pack an emergency kit in your car with supplies and blankets.
